Inside The Phillips Collection
Established in 1921, The Phillips Collection modern art museum immediately gained popularity due to its collections of artworks from prominent art movements of the time such as impressionism. The museum founded by the art collector Duncan Phillips and his wife Marjorie Acker Phillips, a prominent impressionist painter. It is now housed in the family home of the Phillips where several additions and renovations over the years since its founding have made it into a world-class exhibition space.
The architecture of the Phillips Collection is also remarkable, besides its wealth of exhibits. Inside is a stone relief created by the renowned architect Arthur Cotton Moore along with an exquisite winding staircase. The newly added Sant Building has numerous facilities like an auditorium, a café, outdoor courtyard, etc. Inside this building is the Phillips Collection Center for the Study of Modern Art, which functions as an educational center for art scholars and students alike.
Housed in The Phillips Collection is a diverse collection of more than 3000 artworks covering the influential impressionist art movement and modern art. In the collections are the works of great artists who focused on these movements such as Claude Monet, Pierre Auguste Renoir, Pablo Picasso, Vincent Van Gogh, etc. Glancing at these timeless masterpieces is indeed a delightful experience.
The special lighting and benches put in front of the impressionistic masterpieces allow one to delve into the paintings and study their details.
